Bespoke Curved Oak Staircase

This is a solid oak curved staircase with closed treads and risers, designed and manufactured to order by DAB Stairs in 2022. The whole flight follows a continuous sweep, with every tread and riser cut to its own shape to match the curve. We dry-assembled the staircase in our workshop before delivery, so the client received a complete, checked staircase. As with all our work, this was a supply-only project.

Why choose a curved oak staircase?

A curved staircase turns the stairs into a feature of the room. A straight flight is fixed to one wall, but a curve can follow the shape of a hallway, open up the space at the foot of the stairs, and give a gentler, more gradual climb.

Oak suits a curve well. It is hard-wearing, it takes a clear lacquer, oil or stain evenly, and its grain makes the sweep of the strings and treads stand out. Curved oak staircases are a popular choice for period homes, larger entrance halls and new builds.

How this staircase was made

• Design — the flight was drawn to the opening’s exact floor-to-floor height and footprint, and the going, rise and curve were set before any timber was cut.
• Curved strings — the strings were laminated on formers made to the radius of this stair, so the outer edge runs as one unbroken line from bottom to top.
• Treads and risers — each solid oak tread and riser was shaped for its own position on the curve, so the nosings run in a smooth line around the curve.
• Dry assembly — the complete flight was built up in the workshop, as shown in the photos below, to check every joint and line before it left us.
