Fully curved and helical flights, curved bottom steps and cut wreathed strings, designed in CAD and made to measure in our Hertfordshire workshop. Supplied across London, Essex and the UK.

A curved staircase is a staircase whose flight, or part of it, follows a curve on plan, with tapered treads and curved strings and handrails. DAB Stairs, a family-run supply-only manufacturer in Hertford with over 40 years of experience, makes them to measure in softwood, oak and walnut, with a guide price of £15,000 to£35,000+ ex VAT.
No two curved staircases are the same. Each one is drawn in CAD to your floor plan, with its strings and handrails laminated on formers made for that staircase alone, then delivered to site ready for your own joiner or builder. See our case studies for curved staircases we have supplied in London, Hertfordshire and Essex.
From a single curved starter step to a full helical flight, every design is built to your plan and floor-to-floor height.

The whole flight sweeps on plan, with curved strings and a continuous handrail from floor to floor. The statement staircase for a large hallway or double-height entrance.

A straight or turning flight that opens out into curved starter steps at the bottom. It brings the look of a curved staircase into a standard hallway at a lower cost.

An open cut string that shows the profile of each step, with a wreathed handrail turning smoothly round the curve. A classic fit for Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian homes.
A bespoke curved staircase from DAB Stairs costs£15,000 to £35,000+ ex VAT, supply only. Every staircase is quoted individually from your measurements and drawings.

Plan & Radius
A fully curved or helical flight takes the most design and making time. Curved bottom steps on a straight flight are the most economical way to get a curved look.
Timber
Softwood sits at the lower end of the range, oak in the middle and walnut at the top. Mixed specifications, such as a painted string with oak treads, are common.
Strings & Handrail
Curved strings and wreathed handrails are laminated on full-size formers made for your staircase alone. A cut string or a continuous wreathed handrail adds work.
Balustrade
Timber spindles are the most economical. Metal spindles and curved glass panels increase the cost, with curved glass the most expensive option.
Size & Floor Height
Wider treads, taller floor-to-floor heights and flights that rise over more than one floor all add material and machining time.
Prices are a guide for a curved staircase rising one floor, supply only and excluding VAT. Last reviewed October 2026.
A curved staircase is drawn and made around your space, so the design stage matters more than on any other staircase.

Curved staircases benefit most from our £200 design consultation, where we agree the plan, radius, timber and balustrade with you.
We draw the staircase in CAD so you, your architect and building control can check every tread and the walking line before we start.
Strings and handrails are laminated on formers made for your staircase, then machined and assembled in our Hertfordshire workshop.
Your staircase is delivered to site, ready for your own joiner or builder. Curved staircases take longer than our standard 2–3 weeks; we confirm the lead time with your quote.
Every tread on a curved staircase is tapered, so Approved Document K measures the going along the walking line rather than at the edge. We design every curved staircase to meet it, including:

Full FAQAs a guide, a supply-only bespoke curved staircase from DAB Stairs costs £15,000 to £35,000+ ex VAT. Softwood sits at the lower end of that range, oak in the middle and walnut at the top. The final price depends on the plan and radius, the timber, the string and handrail details, the balustrade and the floor-to-floor height. Send us your measurements for a free, no-obligation quote.
Oak is the most popular choice: it is hard-wearing, stable and shows its grain well along a curve. Softwood is the economical option for a painted or carpeted finish, often with oak treads and handrail. Walnut is the premium choice for a dark, rich finish in high-end interiors.
Curved staircases take longer than our standard 2–3 week lead time, because each string and handrail is laminated on formers made for that staircase. We confirm the exact lead time with your quote, once the drawings are approved.
Yes. Every curved staircase we make is designed to Approved Document K. The tapered treads are measured on the walking line, with a minimum 50mm going at the narrow end, a maximum rise of 220mm and minimum going of 220mm on a private stair, a 900mm minimum handrail height and no balustrade gap over 99mm. We supply CAD drawings your building control officer can check.
A helical staircase curves continuously around an open centre, with no central column. A spiral staircase winds around a central post. "Curved staircase" is the wider term and covers helical flights, flights with curved sections and straight flights with curved bottom steps.
